Calzone Pt II, Janice chimes in, Bill adds details

These last two posts have a bigger back story than I've given. It's about my maternal grandparents and the best calzone ever.

When I first heard this story, I think G&G (my grandparents) were visiting me in Spokane for my high school graduation. They bought pizza and calzone's from Bennedito's in Spokane, and Gradpa immediately launched into a story. Bill told about the best calzone he ever ate and how he could never find another one like it no matter where he looked. On top of that, he knew it was in Portland, but he didn't know the name of the calzone joint. Janice, who was there all those years ago when Bill had that blessed meal, replied to his reminiscing by dismissing... "Oh Bill you were just really hungry that day, it couldn't have been that good."

A few years later, I told this hilarious story to my friend Thomas Boltz, and he loved it so much that he started us on a quest to find the best calzone. Oregano's' was pretty darn good, (even a day later after sitting out in the sun with fruit flies!). Benneditos is a little too chewy for my tastes. Oooh, Otto's in Tempe was darn good, but was it the best?? I can't remember any of the other ones we tried, and since then I have seriously cut back on cheese (haha, except for post marathon meals, Las Vegas, and Fat Tuesday!).

Well, Thomas and I got the scoop from Bill and Janice. This recording was at Sizzler after I ran the Eugen Marathon in 2011. Janice wasn't so feisty while remembering the story this time, but she did point out that she and Bill have always pronounced calzone differently. (I can hear my dad right now saying "calt-szo-nee"... he studied in Florence.) Bill also made it known that was his first calzone; was he saying that was a factor in why he liked it so much?

We didn't ever resolve any of our questions. Who makes the best calzone in the world? What matters more in matters of taste, hunger, novelty, or quality? How hungry was Bill on that fateful day in Portland? Enjoy the audio, and let me know if you have any great secret calzone joints! (hmm, I'm sure that some excuse to eat cheese is right around the corner...)

Bill Morrisette and the Best Calzone Ever

Hello Again!

I once told my friend Thomas a story about my gradpa that he loved so much it inspired him to try ever calzone he could get his hands on. Years later, Thomas and I visited my grandparents together and heard the story again from my grandpa. Look for Part II soon with more details and some input from Grandma Janice!

Padilla's Popcorn Roast

Jake, Alex, Natty, Paloma, Rachel, and Stevie taste and discuss Jake's effort to roast coffee in a popcorn popper.

I'm having some issues with Opendrive; not all of my podcast links are being recognized by feedburner, so I'm trying out a new file host, hark.com. Does it work?? Ok, revision to my link on 5.14.... does it work now????

My Cousin Seth Palmer tells about Family Reunions

My cousin Seth Palmer narrates an account of the Morrisette family reunions that happen every two years in the summer on the Oregon Coast. These reunions are some of my most cherished times!

Seth made this in a class a few years ago, and his mother emailed it to the family, and I'll go ahead and call this file the reason I started podcasting!
